Garner Dolphin update

Hello GDST Nation!

We’ll open the pool up for practice at 8 am tomorrow to give kids a chance to get some extra yards in due to missing a few nights of practice this week to thunder and lightning.  This means kids can do some warm up laps prior to the regularly planned workout which will start at 8:30 am.

Our last two meets are open for swimmers to declare and volunteers to sign up. Huge thanks to all of the volunteers this week!  We were able to do a few shifts for timers, which was great. We’d like to do more of that for the next two meets.

The final score was Brighton Forest 314 and Garner Dolphins 173. We had 48 swimmers participate and 58 time drops, which was awesome to see! Swimmers can’t control who they swim against. But they can control practice, preparation, and effort, all of which contribute to time drops. Congratulate your swimmers for dropping time! Continuous improvement should always be a goal for swimmers.

In effort to improve how we prepare for meets, we’ll have parents meetings the next two Mondays at 7 pm. In case you’re not able to attend, here’s some of the things we’ll cover.

  • If you have two physically able guardians and haven’t volunteered at a meet this year, please consider having at least one sign up for a spot in one of the next two meets. If you don’t, other parents end up carrying the load which isn’t sustainable. If we don’t have enough volunteers we’ll end up having to forfeit a meet. If it’s your first time doing a job, we have lots of experienced people that can help you get up to speed.
  • If you plan to volunteer, sign up prior to the meet. Offering to help but not signing up means we have to scramble at the last minute.
  • We’re going to create designated areas for kids to sit. Please make sure your kids sit with the team. This builds camaraderie and makes it easier for Kid Pushers to get kids to the Clerk of Course.

A few things to be aware of for the meet at Glenridge Gators next week:

  • They want to swim a parent/coach relay. If you’re up for it, let us know and bring your suit!
  • The pool only has 5 lanes so there are only 2 in the main event
  • The address is 100 Autumngate Drive, Cary 27518
  • They expect about 70 swimmers for their club
  • Visiting team warm-ups start at 5:30; the first event starts at 6:00
  • They are using stopwatches and will have stopwatches for our timers as well
  • They have a very small parking lot at the pool and encourage families to carpool
  • Walking into the pool area, we will have the right side of the pool
  • For concessions they take cash only and will have pizza, snacks, candy, water and Gatorade for drinks.

We are still in the process of finalizing the banquet date. It looks like it will be either 7/28 or 7/29. We have the clubhouse secured and are working on getting the pool secured. Stay tuned!

See you at the pool!
